With a population of 5,404, Smithers is a service area for most of the Bulkley Valley.

Some history: The Bulkley Valley in which Smithers is situated
was originally inhabited by the Wet'suwet'en, Smithers was founded
in 1913 as the regional headquarters for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.

the board of directors, Sir Alfred Smithers. In 1921, Smithers became the
first incorporated village in British Columbia.

The Bulkley River is another of my favorite places to sit and watch the river flow by.

Telkwa has the well known two bridges which are just beautiful and where
two rivers meet, the Telkwa River which runs into the Bulkley River.

The Equity mine road has been one of my favorite places to visit which is just outside of town. Years back in the summer we would take all of our kids to a spot where they could catch trout and it was right at the side of the road. They would cast their fishing line with float attached and wait for the float to bob up and down. Of course there was always a juicy worm on the hook.

It wasn’t long before the bobber started it’s dance across the water with fishing rod bent over. The kids always had a lot of fun catching and releasing fish back into the pond. We had a blast just watching the expressions on their young faces.

Also in the summer the tall grass grows high in the miles of meadows. Moose, bear, wolves, fox, deer and a host of smaller creatures can be seen wandering all throughout the area. The scenery along the mine road is amazing no matter what season we are in.
