Silverthorne Lake is a small, yet scenic lake that is surrounded by evergreen trees right down to it's shores. Also along the lake shore there are different tall grasses, in these areas you can see ducks, geese and moose from time to time looking for a bite to eat. In summer months you can hear the Loon's call echoing from shore to shore, even though the call to some is eerie, it is the sound of the wilderness.
The lake is only minutes from town off the Buck Flats Road, which is located approximately 3 kilometers west of the town of Houston, turning left off Highway 16. Continue driving on Buck Flats Road for approximately 8 kilometers keeping an eye open for a right hand turn which will take you into Silverthorne Lake. Actually there are some buildings right at the turn. The lake also sits in the Houston Community Forest.

Fishing in the lake can be really good with rainbow trout up to the 8 pound range. Please keep in mind that there is no fishing within 50m of the sign at the outlet of the lake. Also a graveled boat launch will certainly help get your boat into the water. Silverthorne is certainly a great lake for your entire family.

There are hiking trails, or go horseback riding, also it is a nice place for canoeing or paddling around the water. There is approximately 30 km of trails for cross-country skiing when the weather turns cold. Some of the trails have lighting for night skiing. The Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club grooms the trails with a Bombardier 400 Plus so they are in wonderful condition. The Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club has a "Website" and a "Facebook" page with information about the ski trails, etc.. A big thank you goes out to them as all the work is done by volunteers.

Recently, October 21, 2015 I drove up to the lake checking to see what was exactly there, before I wrote up this little article. There are 9 free tent camping sites, although some do pull in smaller camping trailer and trucks with campers. As I mentioned above, there is a graveled boat launch.
Some of the other things that are available are picnic tables, pit toilets and enclosed fire pits.

There is no garbage pick up at the lake, so please be kind enough to carry out what you brought in. Also, if you do have a fire, make sure it is properly extinguished before you leave.
